Religion - Does it tear people apart, or bring them closer together?

Right, I saw a group on here about Mormons, and it got me thinking on another subject while I was replying. (post can be seen here https://unsaneculture.forumotion.net/theology-101-f11/mormons-beliefs-t42.htm#455)
Religion, as a whole is meant to be a good thing right? Then why does it tear so many people apart? It could be argued that religion even causes war, and doesn't prevent it like it should, right? It breaks up relationships, makes love harder to find (in extremist cases) and in many situations, actually makes people fear and loathe others.
Is religion really a good thing?

Its not just about what you highlighted, and there are other religions out there which probably wouldn't be responsible for such things...

Even Islam is supposed to be all about peace and equality, you just have certain groups who take the teachings the wrong way, or to the extreme and warp the message completely.

So, I chose I don't know, although there should've been an option for it depends.. lol

This is true, but I just find it sad. Religion to me, has lost a lot of meanings. But like you said, most is down to extremists. BUT in the case of christianity, there is no SET message to take from it, half promotes how everything but christians is wrong, while the other promotes peace and equality. To love everyone for who they are etc etc. So how can you expect people who follow this to know the right way to go? When even their book doesn't know?

i saw a case where 2 people fell in love but went in to hiding because they were of 2 different religions. and that was over here in the uk.

I've heard a similar story, I think it's really depressing tbh. Religion, the worlds Hitler.

look at all these cases that are coming to light of honour killings. its pretty sad that you cant choose your own partner in this day and age because of religion. obviously these young women arent strict or believe in the religion or they wouldnt do it.

It's just awful, lives are being torn apart, all because of a book. Regardless of its teachings.

i totally agree and have had this debate with many people who dissagree and call themselves religious. truth is they are as much religious as a tree and dont even understand it all. i thought murder was on of the biggest sins but obviously that doesnt go for all religions

I was brought up religious. I mean, church at least twice a week, often 3 times and sometimes 4. I was hardcore!
There are so many hypocrites who go to church, so fucking many.

Exactly my debate, murder is meant to be 'the worst thing' but obviously, in religion IT'S THE RIGHT THING TO DO. contradiction much?

I have as little as possible to do with the church I was brought up in, but since I left, I have been back twice for the funerals of my grandparents.
U know the twat who did my nan's funeral service had the fucking cheak to say in front of the whole fucking church how my nan would want me to go back to church?!

I remember I was friends with a girl once, when I was about 12, really good friends. When she found out I wasn't sure on where I stood with religion, I was told I would be going to hell. And we fell out. Lolz!
